Animal Tranquilizer Found in Increasing Number of Screenings

The animal tranquilizer xylazine has been found in an increasing number of screenings conducted by the healthcare lab Aegis Science Corporation, according to a new study published by the healthcare testing lab based in Nashville, Tennessee. Aegis received patient samples from 39 states. Samples were collected from healthcare patients between the ages of 20 and 73 between April 2021 and March 2022.

How Opioid Misuse is Costing Health Systems

The addiction crisis is increasingly eroding health systems' finances, with the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) costing hospitals more than $95 billion a year, new data from Premier Inc. AI Applied Sciences shows. That's 7.86% of all hospital expenditures, according to the data, which was released first to Axios.
Research Team Looking to Make Fentanyl Less Dangerous

A group of scientists, including a University of Florida researcher, may have found a way to alter the chemical components of fentanyl and lessen its deadly side effects. Jay McLaughlin, a neuroscientist and a professor of pharmacodynamics at the UF College of Pharmacy, is working with scientists at Washington University, the University of Southern California and Stanford University who've discovered a safer version of it.
